Two Wheelers Of Asia

Introduction- Climate Change and the Race for Solutions in Asia:

Our planet faces whirlwinds of change each passing minute, each day global temperatures rise. This affects the entire planet ubiquitously. Although all species are at harm, certain issues are more pertinent to address than others. To effectively counter climate change we need an non-exhaustive list of alternatives in fields of energy, production, agriculture and manufacturing. These often are also sectors which employ marginalized people the most. The largest on-ground effect can be seen where the largest number of the peripheral community delves, which happens to be South Asia. South Asia houses two behemoths, China and India. It’s true that climate change cannot be curbed with just one mechanism. But, Electric vehicles (EVs) offer a promising path forward, reducing dependency on fossil fuels and paving the way for a more sustainable future. Both India and China are pushing for EV adoption on a large scale, with the goal of curbing emissions and establishing themselves as leaders in the global EV market. But as India and China compete to lead the EV charge, India’s latest innovation.

The 4680 Bharat Battery- India’s Leap into EV Leadership:

Ola Electric’s CEO Bhavish Aggarwal made waves in this industry with the introduction of the 4680 Bharat battery, a groundbreaking development that could reshape the EV industry. The battery supposedly has five times the energy density of the previous model, enhanced cost efficiency, quicker charging times, and a commitment to local production. Aggarwal estimates that this battery could reduce EV costs by 30%, attempting to position India as an exporter of EV batteries rather than an importer. Although the 4680 hasn’t yet been tested at scale, it’s already sparking major excitement in the EV community on platforms like Reddit, X and instagram. In Bhavish’s own words, “It’s not just a battery; it’s our entry ticket to the big league.” This ambitious outlook has drawn comparisons to David’s slingshot against Goliath, a fitting metaphor given India’s underdog status compared to China’s dominant EV industry.

India’s star player:

India’s EV innovation is already on display with the Ola S1 Pro scooter powered by the new 4680 battery. With a range of 181 kilometers, a top speed of 116 km/h, and acceleration from 0 to 40 km/h in three seconds, the S1 Pro combines performance with technology.

Tall claims of  Features like hill-hold assist, a touchscreen, voice control, and a companion app make it look like a shiny new toy. However, the path to EV greatness isn’t without bumps. Celebrity and political commentator Kunal Kamra, recently shared a viral tweet of an Ola service center packed with scooters in need of repair, adding, “Looks like Ola is already the market leader…in breakdowns!” Bhavish Aggarwal quickly fired back, suggesting Kamra’s criticism was financially motivated. While the exchange was entertaining, it highlighted genuine concerns around Ola’s customer service and after-sales support, areas where Ola needs to improve to maintain consumer trust and capture a meaningful chunk of the market to catapult towards international production.

Riding (Waves) Government Subsidies:

Ola’s EV expansion benefits from robust government support through initiatives like the FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles) and the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes. These programs provide incentives for local manufacturing and lower costs for companies and consumers. Ola’s partnership with the government also extends to developing charging infrastructure, essential for scaling EV adoption. This partnership bleeds saffron into the rhetoric that the CEO espouses. Despite its commendable initial growth, Ola has faced some setbacks, from reports of scooters catching fire to random instances of reverse mode glitches. Such issues have led to recalls and occasional backlash, even as the scooters continue to break sales records in other regions.

A Diabolical dichotomy:

Adopting EVs on a large scale could be transformative for India. By reducing its reliance on oil imports, some models suggest that the country could save up to $100 billion annually and also create jobs in manufacturing, research, and support services. Additionally, EV adoption would contribute to lower pollution levels in urban hotspots like Delhi and Mumbai, making India a cleaner, greener place to live. With a robust EV industry, India also has the potential to become a global hub for EV production.

Goliath recoups:

While India is making strides, China remains the undisputed leader in the global EV market. With extensive government backing, large-scale manufacturing capacity, and a vertically integrated supply chain, China accounts for nearly 50% of global EV sales. Companies like BYD, Nio, Xpeng, and Geely have built an unmatched EV ecosystem, dominating not just production but also component and battery manufacturing. China’s manufacturing infrastructure presents a formidable challenge. China isn’t just playing the EV game. they built the field, the stadium, and all the seats, is what the author believes.  While Bhavish’s 4680 battery might be the slingshot, the battle against China’s EV industry will be a tough one. Only time will tell if this innovation will help India gain ground in the global market. Bhavish Aggarwal’s vision of India as a leading EV manufacturer for the country is a story worth watching unfold. With the potential to reshape India’s place in the EV market, the Bharat battery could help turn this dream into a reality. We’ll see whether the elephant can indeed take on the mighty dragon in the race for a sustainable future, either way this competition between the aforementioned firms will surely improve the planet each day.
